Unpacking the evening:

Villiera Wine Tasting

We’ll kick off the evening with a selection of Villiera’s ‘green wines’ – for you to sample and enjoy. Karen Green from Villiera Wines will be talking just a little about the Estate’s contribution to sustainability and there will be an opportunity to purchase or order some of their wines that they will bring along.

Villiera is a family run winery in the Stellenbosch region of South Africa, with a strong commitment to preserving the environment and a member of the Biodiversity of Wine Initiative. Villiera specialise in Cap Classique and have a strong reputation for Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The farm has not sprayed insecticides for the past thirteen years and a flock of 1000 Peking ducks are responsible for some natural pest control. There is a strong focus on water conservation, recycling and a greening project (currently in progress), which entails the planting of 1000’s of indigenous trees on the farm. This philosophy has led to a vibrant eco-system on the farm, including huge flocks of guinea fowl and pheasant as well as steenbok, Cape foxes, grey mongooses, porcupines and the threatened blue crane. In 2010 Villiera Wines installed solar power to supply all Villiera’s daytime requirements outside of harvest time. This involves approximately 950 square metres of solar panels mounted on cellar roofs capable of generating 132 KW of power. This is currently the biggest roof mounted Solar Project in South Africa.

Hotel Verde, Cape Town

Jutta from ecocentric will be sharing the story of Hotel Verde in Cape Town. ecocentric have been involved as the green building consultants with the hotel since May 2011 – starting during the early design stage and have seen it through construction, to its opening in August 2013 and through into green hotel operations. The hotel is the only hotel on the continent with two LEED Platinum certifications to its name- the US green building standard – having been awarded the highest certifications for both design and construction and also for its operation. The hotel was awarded a 6-Star Green Star Existing Building Performance (Pilto) certification from the South African Green Building Council for it’ operations – the first hotel in South Africa to achieve this. The story is a worthwhile one sharing: the many accolades, the many firsts in South Africa, the technology and processes implemented, the lessons learned and the ongoing story and the story going forward.

ABOUT GREEN DRINKS:

Green Drinks International
Every month people who work in the environmental field – or are interested in the space – meet up at informal sessions known as Green Drinks. Green Drinks is now active in 668 cities worldwide!

We have a lively mixture of people from NGOs, academia, government and business. Come along and you’ll be made welcome. Just say, “are you green?” and we will look after you and introduce you to whoever is there. It’s a great way of catching up with people you know and also for making new contacts. Everyone invites someone else along, so there’s always a different crowd, making Green Drinks an organic, self-organising network.

These events are very simple and unstructured, but many people have found employment, made friends, developed new ideas, done deals and had moments of serendipity. It’s a force for the good and we’d like to help it spread to other cities. Contact your local node to get the latest info about coming along.
