Green Star Certification

Green Star, developed by the Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA), promote transformation of the South African building industry to environmentally sustainable practices for healthy, efficient and productive buildings, through eight key areas of human and environmental health.

Credits and conditional requirements are organised into these eight categories. Projects can chose the credits they wish to target according to their specific sustainability goals, and achieve a number of points in each of the categories that are then multiplied by their environmental weightings to arrive at a single score. Additional points are then available for innovation.

Green Star was first launched in 2007 as a response to the need for a local contextual tool in South Africa. It was developed by the GBCSA based on the Australian Green Star rating tools. Green Star now has six tools that are driving the change in the South African building industry.

Green Star Rating Systems

Green Star SA Office empowers building developers to rate office buildings on how green and environmentally sustainable they are

Green Star SA Interiors give building tenants the opportunity to build and rate green interior fit outs when they have no control of the base building but control building operations

Green Star SA Existing Building Performance allows building operations teams to measure operations, improvements and maintenance on a consistent scale, with the goal of maximizing operational efficiency while minimizing environmental impacts.

Green Star SA Public & Education Building rating tool is designed with the unique challenges of public and education buildings in mind

Green Star SA Multi Unit Residential rating tool is for large scale residential developments

Green Star SA Retail Centre rating tool is designed for retail developments
